RSS platform company NewsGator Technologies on Tuesday announced the acquisition of popular Macintosh RSS reader NetNewsWire. Brent Simmons, the developer behind NetNewsWire, has also accepted a position at NewsGator.
“We are very excited about this,” Greg Reinacker CTO and Founder of Newsgator, told MacCentral. “We have an online platform that users can find what they are interested in and then we have lots of end user platforms, but people have been asking us for quite a while for a Mac client.”
The NewsGator Online platform provides a highly integrated and synchronized reading/viewing experience across multiple devices, including the web, mobile phones, televisions, and email clients. The recent FeedDemon acquisition extended this to the Windows desktop, and now with NetNewsWire, the platform extends to the Mac desktop as well.
“Rather than try to build something, we looked for the best client out there and clearly that is NetNewsWire,” said Reinacker.
Simmons said that the deal would allow him to focus more of his time on actually improving the product, instead of taking time away to focus on the business.
According to Reinacker, NetNewsWire will remain around the same price as it is now. As part of this deal, existing NetNewsWire full-version customers will receive a free 2-year paid subscription to NewsGator Online. More details will be announced with the next release of NetNewsWire, which will include advanced features and functions from NewsGator Online.
Reinacker also confirmed that once your subscription to NewsGator runs out, you can still use NetNewsWire as an RSS reader.
