VeriSign Inc. has bought network infrastructure that underlies key services for bloggers from owner Scripting News Inc. for US$2.3 million in cash, the companies announced Friday.
The infrastructure includes the Weblogs.com site, which shows a list of recently updated blogs, and its “ping” server, which allows bloggers to send notifications to one another when they update their blogs.
The Weblogs.com server deals with almost 2 million pings daily, the companies said.
By moving the site’s ping function onto its servers, VeriSign will be able to deliver a more reliable and scalable service to users, it said. It intends to continue operating Weblogs.com as an “openly available service,” it said.
