German company Nova media on Wednesday announced its Globetrotter Combo EDGE, a PC card designed to work with PowerBooks that enables them to communicate wirelessly worldwide on cellular networks. The Globetrotter Combo EDGE costs €339 plus VAT (US$410.16).
The Globetrotter Combo EDGE makes it possible for users of PowerBooks equipped with PC card slots (like the PowerBook G4 15- and 17-inch models) to communicate with data networks using Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), a “3G” cell data transmission technology. Where EDGE is not available, the card falls back to General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).
The card provides download speeds of up to 236Kbps, and upload speeds of up to 118Kbps. The card features a retractable internal antenna and has a connection for an external antenna (not included) to help boost signal reception strength.
System requirements call for a PowerBook with PC car d slot and Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later.
