Mendocino, Calif.-based SoftRAID LLC on Monday announced the release of SoftRAID 3.3, a new version of their software RAID for Mac OS X. A free upgrade for all 3.x users, SoftRaid 3.3 costs US$129 for a download version, $149 for a CD-based version.
SoftRAID provides numerous enhancements and features not offered by Apple’s own Disk Utility software, which provides its own limited support of RAID arrays. You can combine non-RAID and RAID volumes on the same disks, for example, create custom volume sizes, add disks to a Mirror volume, and much more.
New to this release is improved Mirror rebuilding technology — they’re now faster and more transparent. Volumes optimized for Workstation and Server now get higher rebuilding priority.
Also fixed in this release is a conflict with Alsoft’s DiskWarrior 3 software under Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger,” improved compatibility with third-party Serial ATA (SATA) cards and more.
SoftRAID managing director Miriam Block said in a statement that the company is nearing completion on Mac Intel compatibility and plans to be ready when Apple’s first Intel-based hardware ships.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or later.
