Sonnet Technologies on Thursday announced its Encore/ST G4 Duet 1.7GHz — a dual processor upgrade for Power Mac G4 systems. The $599.95 CPU upgrade is the same price as a slower 1.3GHz dual processor system it replaces.
The Encore/ST G4 Duet fits in most “Sawtooth” era Power Mac G4s — include AGP Graphics, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio and QuickSilver models.
Sonnet notes that certain Power Mac G4 systems can’t use dual-processor upgrades — more information is available online.
The upgrade uses Freescale Semiconductor’s PowerPC G4 7447A processors — the same type used in Apple’s current PowerBook line, according to Sonnet — and features 512K Level 2 cache.
Compatible with Mac OS 9.2 and Mac OS X v10.3.5 or later, the upgrade comes equipped with a factory-attached heatsink.
Sonnet includes a three-year warranty and free technical support.
