Aspyr Media has released a Universal Binary version of Doom 3, the popular first person shooter first released for the Mac in 2005. The 1.3 Rev A update is free for registered users.
Doom 3, developed by id Software, retells the story of the original Doom. It’s a first-person shoot that puts you in the role of a Marine sent to a research outpost on the planet Mars, where a scientific experiment has gone awry and nightmarish creatures have begun to invade. It’s up to you to stop them in their tracks before they can make their way to Earth.
The 1.3 Rev A patch enables Doom 3 to run natively on Apple’s new Intel-based Macs. The update results in greatly improved performance and much higher frame rates on those machines. The patch has been available as a private beta for several weeks, but now it’s in general circulation and available to the public.
Other changes have been made as well. Aspyr claims improved performance on some PowerPC-based Macs equipped with ATI graphics hardware. The minimum supported operating system for this release is Mac OS X v10.3.9.
