Reader G. Breton would like to use files created with a much-beloved, but no-longer-available, outlining application. He writes:
I recently found a number of old floppy disks containing files that were created with MORE 3.0—outliner software I bought from Symantec in 1991. I now have an iMac G5 with OS X v.10.4. Symantec no longer sells MORE, but I called them to ask whether they could direct me to a firm that sells upgrades of MORE, or an outliner program for Mac OS X v.10.4 that could read my old MORE 3.0 files. The person who answered referred me to another person, who referred me to another one, and so on through six different telephone number, and the amazing thing is that none of these people knew what I was talking about. My old MORE files are very important, and I would like very much to be able to use them again and to work on them and with them.
As you suggest, MORE is no more—at least not in a form offered by Symantec. However, you’re not completely out of luck.
Symantec allowed Dave Winer—one of the brains behind the program—to offer MORE 3.1 free of charge. This he did on the now-defunct Outliners.com website. While the website may be gone, Google’s caching feature reveals that an active link to the program still exists, right here.
Installing the thing in the Classic environment is problematic if you use the installer. Instead, just open the Program/Installer folder and use the copy of MORE 3.1 found within it. It runs perfectly well under Classic.
But we know that Classic is going away come the Intel Macs so what then?
OmniOutliner. The $40 standard edition of the program can directly open MORE files.
Update: Rumors of Outliners.com’s demise were premature. The site’s back up and in operation. You can view the MORE 3.1 page here.
