Defaultware on Thursday announced that its multi-client chat software for Mac OS X Proteus is now free. Proteus previously cost $15 to register.
Proteus provides support for several different disparate instant messaging (IM) protocols. It supports AOL Instant Messenger and .Mac, MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ, Jabber and Google Talk, Gadu Gadu and Sametime.
With version 4.12’s release, Proteus is free. Users still need to go through the software’s purchase process, but they won’t be charged anything.
Defaultware will also release an update that removes the registration process all together; that upcoming release will fix bugs and will be a Universal Binary for Intel Macs.
Proteus 4.12 requires Mac OS X v10.3 or later.
