Corel Corp. on Monday announced that the new Painter IX.5 supports Rosetta, making it possible to run on Intel-based Macs. The new release also touts several new features. Available now as an electronic download, Painter IX.5 is free for registered IX users; it costs $429 for a new copy, which will be available on store shelves beginning in April.
Painter is painting and illustration software that enables digital artists to create works that simulate natural media and brushes. It can also be used by digital photographers who want to touch up their work or simulate paintings.
Painter IX.5 has been updated to support Rosetta, the translation technology that enables Intel-based Macs like the new iMac and MacBook Pro to run software optimized for the PowerPC processor. This is different than a Universal Binary, which is a software application optimized to run either on an Intel or PowerPC chip. Corel has vetted Painter IX.5 to make sure that it runs effectively using Rosetta.
Also new in this release are Photo Painting Palettes, including Underpainting, Auto-Painting and Restoration. The new Eraser Tool erases any medium on the canvas, and a new Rubber Stamp Tool lets users set up point-to-point cloning. The Cloner tool provides instant access to the lsat used Cloner brush and variant.
What’s more, new buyers of Corel Painter IX.5 will receive two CDs containing training videos from Lynda.com.
Mac system requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later, G3/500MHz or faster, 128MB RAM, mouse o tablet, 24-bit color display, 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, CD-ROM drive and 395MB hard disk space.
