FastMac on Friday announced the availability of 8x dual layer optical drive mechanisms for various Mac models. The new drives start at $149.95 and are available while supplies last, according to the company.
The drives can burn DVDs and CDs, and work without any special software drivers or patching, according to FastMac. They’re 100 percent compatible with all versions of Mac OS X, natively support Finder burning, and also work with Apple’s iLife software.
The slimline drives can be installed in PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs and Mac minis. Pricing ranges from $149.95 to $199.95 depending on which Mac you’re upgrading; some Macs require special parts to fit the drive inside. Also included is a free copy of Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther.”
