If you’re looking for real handset to make your Voice over IP (VoIP) phone calls with that more closely resembles a cell phone, you might be interested in D-Link’s forthcoming DPH-540. The company expects the handset to go on sale this summer for under $300.
The DPH-540 lets you make VoIP calls anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot that you can use to connect to the Internet. It supports the IEEE 802.11g wireless networking standard, and features a color display that shows you the numbers you dial, address book entries and caller ID. It also supports redial, mute, hold and text messaging.
The DPH-540 supports Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and features echo cancellation, packet delay compensation and lost packet recovery. It also works with WPA-PSK for enhanced wireless security.
