GizMac Accessories LLC plans to ship its new 4U XRackPro rackmount cabinet in early May. The device is designed to reduce noise from hardware operating within it, and will cost $499.
Although it’s not limited to use with Apple’s Xserve and Xserve RAID products, GizMac’s XRackPro does pay special attention to Apple’s server hardware. It enables users to install rack-mounted equipment like the Xserve and Xserve RAID in a cabinet, rather than relying on a bulky rack that’s bolted to a floor or a wall.
The new 4U device is one-third the height of its 12U sibling, and slightly more than half the weight. It also includes features not found in the 12U product, such as legs instead of wheels, for added stability. The legs are height-adjustable and coated with a protective material to avoid damaging furniture. Regular strength casters are an option.
GizMac hopes the new noise reduction enclosure will appeal to users who need a quiet environment, like audio or video engineers.
