Telestream Inc. has announced that Universal Binary support for its Windows Media Components for QuickTime are the company’s top development priority, and it plans to release the software within the next calendar quarter. Telestream makes MWV Player and WMV Studio, which make it possible to view, edit and export Windows Media Video files using Apple’s QuickTime and QuickTime-compatible software.
Telestream’s WMV Player and WMV Studio have existed for a while as a nifty but somewhat niche product aimed mainly at video pros and others who needed to manipulate Windows Media Video (WMV)-format digital content but didn’t want to use a PC.
The software’s public exposure got a big boost in January when Microsoft announced plans to stop development of Windows Media Player for Mac and directed Mac users to download Telestream’s Flip4Mac WMV Player software — previously $10 to register, but now free.
Unfortunately, users of Intel-based Macs have been kept out of the loop — Telestream’s WMV Player and WMV Studio products aren’t able to work on Intel-based Macs.
Telestream CEO Dan Castles said in a statement that Mac user response to Telestream’s Windows Media Components for QuickTime has exceeded his company’s expectations.
“We are not only committed to ongoing support and development, but also look forward to releasing additional important new features and product enhancements which are currently in process,” said Castle.
Telestream’s Windows Media Components product line ranges in price from free to $179, depending on your needs — it develops products for both home and professional users.
