Western Digital on Monday announced the My Book Pro Edition, a new version of its backup external hard disk drive for Macs and PCs. Available in capacities of 250GB and 500GB, the My Book Pro features three interfaces — USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800.
The external drive gets its name from its unqiue enclosure shape — the silver drive sits vertically features a design that looks like a hardcover book. It features EMC’s Retrospect Express backup software. The enclosure is vented but works without a fan, and features shock-protection to keep the driive mecehanism safe.
The drive also features a capacity gauge LED that lets you see how much free space remains. A lighted power button lets you know if the drive is operational. It doesn’t have to work as a backup system, either — it can operate as a boot drive on FireWire-equipped Macs, or it can just serve as a large, external repository for additional files.
The 250GB version costs $219; the 500GB model costs $349. The drive is compatible with Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later.
