Seagate’s new Maxtor Shared Storage II system features Mac and Windows-compatible networked storage with one terabyte (TB) of capacity using two individual drive mechanisms. It costs $899.95 and ships this month.
The shared Storage II system is a network attached storage peripheral that features network installation. It uses a Gigabit Ethernet connection to attach to the network, and can support Maxtor OneTouch or Seagate Pushbutton USB external storage systems for backup or additional storage capacity. The drives operate at 7200 RPM and have 16MB of cache buffer RAM.
The dual drive configuration can support RAID Level 1 (disk mirroring), for maximum redundancy. Two USB ports let you connect and share USB printers or additional storage systems. The device measures 5.4 x 3.9 x 8.5 inches and weighs 6 lbs.
The Shared Storage II system supports “Drag and Sort,” which automatically identifies and sorts more than 100 different file types and puts them in directories specified for music, photos, movies, Web, software or documents. You drag the files into their Finder icon and they’re automatically sorted.
The Shared Storage II system can also stream media to compatible Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)-compliant digital media servers. It supports Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) guidelines as well.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later.
