MCE Technologies has added a 160GB Serial ATA (SATA) 2.5-inch hard disk drive to its arsenal of upgrades for Macs. The drive fits inside Apple’s MacBook Pro, MacBook and Intel-based Mac mini systems, acting as a replacement for the factory-installed drive. It costs $299 and ships now.
The drive mechanism operates at 5400 RPM and includes an 8MB data cache buffer. It uses perpendicular recording to store information on the drive, which provides greater data density in a smaller area — that means it’s faster and can hold more data. The drive also features support for Native Command Queuing (NCQ). Its transfer rate is measured at 67.5MB per second sustained, with burst speeds of up to 150MB per second.
MCE’s kit includes all necessary tools and parts.
