Aspyr Media has released the beta version of
1.61 Rev A, a patch for their recently released Mac version of Sid Meier’s Civilization IV. The 15MB update
is available for download
The beta patch update has been released to correct problems some users noted in the shipping version. It offers better performance on certain Macs — particularly G5 systems — that exhibited excessive CPU use. “The game should no longer run dual CPU’s to 100 percent capacity,” reported Aspyr.
Also in this beta update, Aspyr has corrected a problem that prevented some sounds from playing correctly. “Other sounds may still be inaudible. A future official release of the Rev A patch will address those,” said the company in a statement.
This update is billed as a beta release, and “may have problems not in the original game,” according to the publisher, but it’s being released to provide relief for those users who have reported difficulty getting Civilization IV to run well on their Macs.
Besides some continuing sound problems, Aspyr said that known issues in the beta involve kernel panics on Intel Macs, which may be corrected by installing the latest version of the Mac OS X v10.4.7 Combo update. Alternately, turning off Full Scene Anti Aliasing (FSAA) options or running the game in a window may also fix the problem.
