Want more room to edit photos in iPhoto 6 ? First, do the obvious and make sure your dock is hidden, so that you can maximize the iPhoto window to its (apparent) largest size. But if you want a touch more room, important on machines such as my 12-inch PowerBook G4 with its 1,024-by-768 resolution, here’s a nifty trick…
While in edit mode (regardless of whether you edit in full-screen mode, in a separate window, or in the main window), just press the w key. When you do, the main menu bar will vanish. Press it again, and the menu bar comes back. If you’re in full screen mode, this makes sense—no need for the menu bar when you’re editing an image using your full screen and the editing toolbar at the bottom of the image. It’s strange (probably a bug) that it also works in the other two edit modes.
If you’re editing in the main window mode, you can press w and then zoom the iPhoto window, and it will expand to take the space previously used by the menu bar. (If you press w again after expanding the iPhoto window, the menu bar will come back, covering the top portion of your window. To get it back, you’ll have to press w once again, then shrink the iPhoto window, and then press w one final time to restore the menu bar.)
While this mode was probably only meant to be used in full-screen editing, I certainly appreciate the extra pixels when working in a window on my PowerBook!
