The brainchild of software developer Phillip Ryu, My Dream App is a new kind of contest that is looking for the next killer idea for an application. In its second week of reader voting the contest is down to 18 applications from the 2,700 submissions.
“My Dream App is a grand experiment to see what happens when you combine the expertise of some of the best talents in the software and tech world with great ideas and feedback from everyone else,” Phill Ryu, told Macworld.
The contest received the original ideas from around the world and with the help of developers John Casasanta (iClip), Jason Harris (ShapeShifter), Austin Sarner (AppZapper) and Martin Ott (SubEthaEdit), the list was whittled down to 24. Each week well-known technology pundits and readers vote for their favorites. The bottom six vote getters are dropped from the contest each week.
This week guest judges John Siracusa (Ars Technica), John Gruber (Daring Fireball) and Scott McNulty (TUAW) gave their thoughts on the remaining submissions to help voters with their decision. After the first round of voting was completed last week a total of 45,000 votes were cast.
My Dream App has prizes for applications that don’t make the cut and they also give away an application to readers who take the time to vote. This week readers will receive a free license for Mori ($27.95), a notebook application that equips users with tools to organize their notes, files, documents and pictures.
Voting is live now and will continue through 11:59 p.m. PDT on Friday, Sept. 29. The six finalists with the lowest vote totals will be eliminated from the competition and will receive newly released silver iPod nanos.
“We think we’ll have 3 innovative, killer apps by the end of this event,” said Ryu. “It’ll be up to the readers to help decide which ideas make the cut and how they evolve throughout the event.”
