Western Digital (WD) on Tuesday introduced a new one-terabyte version of its My Book external storage system. The My Book Pro Edition II costs $549 and is Mac and PC-compatible. It features FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interface.
Using two 500GB hard disk drive mechanisms striped together is a RAID Level 0 array for better performance, the My Book Pro Edition II alternately can be configured with up to half its capacity mirrored instead (RAID Level 1) for better redundancy.
What’s more, the My Book Pro Edition II is user-serviceable — if one or both of the hard drives fails, they can be replaced without voiding the system’s three-year warranty, according to WD.
The drive comes with EMC Retrospect Express v7.5 backup and system recovery software. The drive also features “Data Lifeguard” technology that isolates and repairs problems on the drive and “SmartPower,” a feature that automatically powers the drive up and down with the host computer.
