REAL Software on Wednesday announced the release of REALbasic 2006 Release 4, the newest version of its programming language and rapid application development platform. A free update for customers with a current support plan, REALbasic 2006 Release 4 is priced starting at $99, with upgrades available starting at $50.
REALbasic 2006 Release 4 is a Universal binary that runs natively on Intel and PowerPC-based Macs, and REAL Software said that the Universal version yields higher performance on Intel-based Macs — up to twice as fast. But what’s more, REALbasic 2006 Release 4 is also capable of building Universal binary versions of applications created using the software.
Other enhancements in this release include cross platform toolbar support, a removal of the 2GB limit on files and binary streams, check for errors, a new Currency datatype, extended 64-bit integer support and improved reliability.
Users of REALbasic Professional Edition also gain AES 256 encryption in REAL SQL databases and a new Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Socket that gains support for secure listening.
