A recent post to the Bay Area Craigslist service shows that Future US, publishers of MacAddict magazine, plan to relaunch the publication next spring with a new name and new focus. The new magazine will be called Mac|Life . What’s more, they’re looking for a new editor-in-chief.
MacAddict launched 11 years ago under the aegis of Imagine Publishing. The magazine launched as an alternative to other printed Mac monthlies in North America like Macworld and MacUser . It differentiated itself from other publications with a more irreverant editorial voice focused on Mac enthusiasts. It also includes a cover CD-ROM that contains software and content culled from the print magazine. The publication has also spawned a companion Web site with active user discussion forums.
Mac|Life , the name of the relaunched magazine is too close for comfort for Your Mac Life , a long-running Mac radio webcast.
“We’re not happy about the name change. They’ve know about us and the similarity of the names is too close for comfort,” said Shawn King, the show’s host and executive producer. “We are consulting lawyers as to what our next move will be.”
The posting to Craigslist.org indicates that Future US is looking to fill the editor-in-chief’s seat, currently held by Rik Myslewski, who came on board in 2001. Prior to his tenure at MacAddict , Myslewski was vice president and editorial director of Productopia, a product review Web site. He also had tenures as executive editor of MacUser and executive producer of Macworld Live!
Myslewski has confirmed the news in a posting to the MacAddict Web site, with an explanation of the name change, description of how the publication will change, and information about his new role at the magazine.
