Acertant Technologies has announced the release of Versomatic 1.0 for Mac OS X. The announcement follows the software’s successful public beta testing. Versomatic costs $39.99 for the month of November.
Part backup system, part version control, Versomatic automatically monitors any file changes and enables you to restore files to earlier versions. You can also recover deleted and accidentally overwritten files.
Versomatic doesn’t depend on “snapshot” or backup schedules, said Acertant, which it asserts is a key difference from Time Machine, the backup system that’s integrated into Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard.”
Versomatic works using a contextual menu that, when activated, reveals a pop-up menu that enables you to review the document’s revision history — clicking on a date and time will enable you to restore that file or export a copy of it.
You can also add comments, search archives using keywords, export revision histories to a compressed file, and customize what files Versomatic will and won’t archive.
System requirements call for a G3 or better (it’s a Universal binary, so it runs natively on Intel Macs), 256MB RAM, 15MB free hard disk space. A free trial version is available for download.
