Disney President and CEO Bob Iger remarked during the company’s recent fourth quarter earnings call that Disney has sold nearly 500,000 movies through the iTunes Store, since the service launched movie downloads in mid-September, 2006.
“This underlines the strength and uniqueness of our film library, and indicates there is a consumer appetite for movie downloads that complements demand for DVD,” said Iger.
So far, Disney is the only major movie producer to offer content for download from iTunes.
Iger later remarked that Disney has seen downloads totally approximately 85 million over the past year — combining TV shows, movies and shorts made available via the iTunes Store, disneychannel.com and abc.com.
Twelve million ABC TV programs have been purchased since they first went online through the iTunes Store, Iger said.
