Nikon on Thursday introduced its D40, a new digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera that costs $599.95. The camera includes a 3X Zoom-Nikkor lens and features 6.1-megapixel effective resolution. It should hit stores in December.
The camera touts a 2.5-inch LCD screen that displays menu options, pictures in playback mode and other content. It can shoot 2.5 pictures per second non-stop for up to 100 shots, and records images to a Secure Digital (SD) flash memory card.
Nikon says the D40 is its smallest and lightest digital SLR ever. The body measures 5.0 x 2.5 x 3.7 inches and weighs 1 pound, 1 ounce.
Eight preset shooting modes are built in, including a new Flash Off mode that shuts off the camera’s flash and boosts its ISO — useful for places where flash photography isn’t allowed. A Retouch feature lets you brighten dark pictures and do red-eye correction in-camera. Image Trim can crop pictures. Other creative features in the camera include filter effects, monochrome, small picture and image overlay capabilities.
The D40 includes an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor lens. It’s also compatible with Nikon’s entire line of AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses.
