Battlegrounds: RPG Edition is a “virtual tabletop” for role playing games — a toolset used for people who like to play pen-and-paper role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons. It works with Mac OS X, according to the software’s developer. It costs $29.95 for a game master (GM) client and $12.95 for player client. Five-packs of floating licenses are available.
Battlegrounds: RPG Edition includes an interactive gameboard on which to place your digital miniatures, a dice roller, text chat with private and group messaging, supporting both “in-character” and “out-of-character” dialogue, the ability to send and play audio clips, such as sound effects and music; and the ability to show visual aids. You can also use Battlegrounds: RPG Edition to access character sheets, game rules, charts and tables, and use a notepad for tracking game info.
Battlegrounds: RPG Edition also supports “Dynamic Fog-of-War,” which gradually reveals a dungeon map as players explore the area, depending on light sources and each individual character’s vision abilities.
The Mac OS X version of Battlegrounds: RPG Edition was developed simultaneously with its Windows counterpart. A free demo is available. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.1.5 or later, a G3 or better, 128MB RAM, 100MB hard disk space, 16-bit graphics, 1024 x 768 resolution.
