Sales of Nintendo’s Wii games console hit 372,000 units over its first two days on the market, according to figures from Enterbrain Inc.
Enterbrain publishes local gaming magazine Famitsu and its figures are generally regarded in the gaming industry as reliable.
The Wii went on sale on Saturday and quickly sold-out. That means, if Enterbrain’s figures are correct, Nintendo had managed to distribute a little fewer than the 400,000 consoles it had estimated would be available for the launch.
The top selling software title was “Wii Sports,” which sold 176,880 units, according to Enterbrain. Just behind it was “First Wii” with sales of 171,888 units. “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” ranked third with sales of 145,068 units.
The sales are well above those of the PlayStation 3 on its launch weekend although that isn’t an indication of the relative popularity. Both consoles sold-out and PlayStation 3 sales were lower, at around 88,400, because of tighter supply from Sony.
Stocks of the Wii have been replenished at some stores but have quickly sold-out. On Tuesday afternoon a line grew outside an electronics retailer in central Tokyo as staff sold Wii consoles straight from packing boxes to customers. The entire consignment was quickly snapped up by consumers and the “sold-out” signs went back up.
The Wii goes on sale in Australia on Thursday and across Europe on Friday.
