Atlantic Inc. on Monday introduced the Ego, a waterproof “sound case” for the iPod that lets you play music in the shower, swimming pool and elsewhere that the iPod would otherwise get ruined. It costs $199.
The Ego is a portable boom box equipped with a dock connector. It works with fourth and fifth-generation iPods, iPod minis and iPod nanos. Dual full-range neodymium drivers are complemented by vented bass ports and waterproof speaker designs. The iPod is protected underneath a silicone gasket and snap-locking latch; you can control the iPod through a waterproof membrane.
The Ego is powered by four AA batteries that last for 30 hours of continuous use, according to the manufacturer. It will automatically shut off after two and a half minutes of inactivity to help conserve battery life as well.
The Ego is spill-proof and shatter-proof, according to Atlantic, and is resistant to sea water corrosion and pool water — if it’s completely immersed it floats.
