The latest version of SQL Anywhere, adding native Intel compatibility to the data management and synchronization software, is now available from Sybase iAnywhere. SQL Anywhere 10 boasts 200 enhancements in areas covering performance, data protection, developer productivity, and data synchronization.
“Enterprises and [independent software vendors] looking for an easy-to-use, embeddable database that can handle large volumes of mission-critical data in frontline environments will find it in SQL Anywhere 10,” said iAnywhere vice president of engineering Dave Neudoerffer in announcing SQL Anywhere 10’s release.
Sybase describes SQL Anywhere as an “enterprise-caliber” SQL database synching solution. Specifically, the software focuses on capturing and managing data in frontline environments such as high-performance server and desktop applications running at remote customer sites, workgroup applications running in remote offices, or mobile apps used by sales and service forces.
SQL Anywhere 10 will only run on Intel-based Macs. While Sybase iAnywhere would consider a PowerPC version if there was enough demand for it, the company says it’s following Apple’s lead by focusing on Intel-based hardware.
“Apple’s completely gone to an Intel product line, so that’s what we’re targeting,” said director of product marketing Michael Paola.
Among the performance-boosting enhancements to SQL Anywhere 10 are the addition of materialized views, adding the ability to store predefined result sets in the database, and support for intra-query parallelism. The update also features enhanced methods for data protection, including built-in high availability data monitoring, Veritas cluster agent options, table level encryption, and FIPS 140-2 validated security. A performance analysis and application profiling tool has been added to enhance developer productivity. SQL Anywhere also adds graphical administration tools for synchronization architecture setup and deployment.
A five-user base package for SQL Anywhere starts at $595. Sybase iAnywhere offers different deployment options on a per CPU or per seat basis; contact Sybase for pricing information.
In addition to the new version of SQL Anywhere, Sybase has also made a free Developer Edition of the software is available for download; it’s also on display at the Sybase iAnywhere booth in the Moscone Center’s North Hall at Macworld Expo (booth #N4034).
