Parallels, makers of Parallels Desktop for Mac, has publicly acknowledged its relationship to parent company SWsoft. The news comes on the heels of a report by Fortune noting the relationship.
Parallels Desktop for Mac enables Intel-based Mac users to run Windows without restarting their computers, as they do with Apple’s Boot Camp software. It’s proven to be incredibly popular since its introduction this past year, and even received a Best of Show award from Macworld at this month’s Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco.
Fortune senior editor David Kirkpatrick noted that three years ago, Parallels was “quietly purchased by an enterprise-focused virtualization company called SWsoft.” SWsoft CEO Serguei Beloussov “calls the shots for programmers who are based in Moscow,” according to the report.
In a joint statement, Beloussov and Parallels CEO Nick Dobrovolskiy acknowledge the relationship, and said that while “each company will remain a separate entity and maintain its own brand identity and website,” they will each now be able to “openly communicate the strengths of our respective products to our customers, partners and other external stakeholders.”
“Both companies have succeeded by focusing on markets that are not served by other vendors, including OS virtualization for x86 platforms and virtualization for MacOS. Continuing this strategy, SWsoft and Parallels will be announcing more products that will enhance the choices available to IT professionals, developers and consumers. These will include a server edition of Parallels, as well as tools for managing multiple virtualization technologies – whether from SWsoft, Parallels or other vendors – with one user interface,” read the statement.
