QuickerTek on Monday introduced its $225 Quicky, a USB transceiver designed to improve the wireless networking range of Apple iMacs. The Quicky can provide up to ten times the wireless performance of the iMac’s built-in wireless networking hardware, according to Quickertek.
The Quicky attaches to the iMac’s USB port, and doesn’t require you to disassemble the iMac or connect its AirPort Extreme networking card directly. An AC adapter is included, although the device can be powered by USB as well.
The Quicky incorporates four LEDs to show you when data is being transmitted and received, as well as power and link status. The Quicky broadcasts using 500mW of power — ten times the power output of the iMac’s built-in wireless networking, according to QuickerTek.
Quicky can clip to the top of the iMac and connects using a short USB cable. It works with all IEEE 802.11b and g compliant WiFi hardware including Apple AirPort and AirPort Extreme. It requires no software drivers.
