After a public beta testing period that began in mid-November, Skype announced Wednesday that Skype for Mac 2.5 has gone “gold.” Skype is a Voice over IP (VoIP)-based chat and messaging service that works on Mac OS X and other operating systems.
New to this release is the ability to send Short Message Service (SMS) messages to any mobile phones and conference calling between up to ten people. It also supports one-on-one video calls.
Skype provides users with the ability to text message, audio chat and video chat with each other for free. It also supports the ability to make and receive calls from landlines and cell phones using optional pay-to-play services.
System requirements call for a G4/800MHz or faster (Intel included), Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later, 512MB RAM, 40MB hard disk space, microphone and webcam.
