Vendio Services on Thursday announced the launch of Widgipedia.com, a new Web site dedicated to the development and distribution of Web-based and desktop widgets, for Mac, PC and Linux.
Widgets, in the Mac OS X parlance, are small applications that run in Mac OS X’s Dashboard environment. Apple isn’t the only company that’s developed an engine for widgets, however. Yahoo and Google have their own, as does Microsoft. Widgipedia.com provides a centralized resource for finding them.
Widgipedia.com collects Web widgets designed using Flash, DHTML and Java, as well as Yahoo! widgets, Dashboard widgets, standalone widgets and Opera widgets, all of which can work on Mac OS X. What’s more, Widgipedia.com has also collected widgets that work on Windows and Linux operating systems as well, including those designed for Microsoft’s new Vista operating system (to avoid confusion, Microsoft calls them “gadgets”).
