Another utility jumps into the broadband market

Right now, there’s some mild competition between the cable companies and phone companies in the broadband arena with cable modems and DSL respectively. Market saturation pushed dialup internet access to less than $10 a month. Low end DSL has fallen to $15 a month (assuming a few prerequisite conditions), but the high end is still a little more costly, particularly with cable.

The good news is that the power companies are throwing their hat into the ring. Using Broadband over Power Lines or BPL, they’ll be able to deliver Internet access with speeds in excess of 1 Mbps. That means that electric customers (you do use electricity, right?) will be able to buy access in the future from their power company. With VOIP and TV on the net, who needs the telephone companies or cable providers? Now is the time for them to pounce.
