CES Unveiled@NY ’07: I got whupped at Quake 4, and all I got was this T-shirt
By Dan Moren, Macworld
Among the more
events on the show floor at CES Unveiled was the chance to compete against one of the top ranked Quake 4 players in the world. Having played a decent amount of Quake 3 in my day, I thought I’d give it a shot.
“This guy’s ranked fifth in the world,” the rep told me. “But he’s got a good shot at taking the number one slot at the upcoming
World Series. If you can get two kills on him, we’ll give you this mouse.” I guess I must not have looked like too much of a threat, as after a quick conversation with one of the other reps, they allowed that even
kill would get me the mouse. The game was a four-minute timed round, or 10 frags—whichever came first. “Stay alive for all four minutes and we’ll give you this sound card. And, of course, you get the T-shirt just for playing.”
I made my first faux pas by misidentifying the game as Unreal Tournament, which I’ve played once or twice—this didn’t bode well for me. I shook hands with my opponent, a pleasant guy by the name of Rafik “LoSt-CaUzE” Bryant, and then it was off to try my—wait, I’m dead already?
. All told, I think I lasted
two minutes without a single kill to my name. Perhaps it’s time to start training.
All in all, not the worst thing I’ve ever had to do for a free T-shirt. And it’s nice enough I might actually wear it.
