Wireless connectivity hardware maker Sierra Wireless on Monday announced plans to deliver its AirCard 595U modem to cell service provider Sprint. The EV-DO Rev A-capable USB modem will ship via Sprint retail channels in April, for as low as $49.99 with two-year agreement and mail-in rebate.
In areas Sprint serves with EV-DO Rev A capabilities, the modem will be able to communicate up to 3.1 megabits per second (mbps) downstream and up to 1.8 mbps upstream. In environments not yet serviced by EV-DO Rev A capabilities, the modem will fall back to slower speeds. It’s field firmware upgradeable, and supports roaming capabilities. It features an internal antenna.
Unlike other products that depend on PC card or ExpressCard expansion slots, the AirCard 595U is a USB-based peripheral, making it compatible with a wider range of Macs and PCs. It includes a docking cradle for easy connectivity and uses an internal battery. It also supports Global Positioning System (GPS).
