Other World Computing (OWC) on Tuesday announced the release of its Mercury Elite-AL Pro quad interface drive in a 1 terabyte (TB) capacity. This external drive uses only one mechanism, according to OWC. It costs $599.
The quad interface drive sports FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and external Serial ATA (eSATA) for maximum flexibility with whatever peripheral interface you choose to use. eSATA is available for Power Macs and Mac Pros using a third-party expansion card.
While external drives have met or exceeded 1TB in total capacity for a while, they’ve enclosed two or more hard disk mechanisms to achieve that capability. Typically the mechanisms are configured in a RAID array so they appear as one logical volume to the host computer. OWC’s new drive is different because it uses a single 3.5-inch drive mechanism with a total (unformatted) capacity of 1TB.
The compact external drive features a shock-resistant design and blue activity LED behild the front grille. It can exceed transfer rates of 80 megabytes per second using FireWire 800 and up to 150 megabytes per second via eSATA.
All cables are included, along with Intech Hard Disk Speedtools software and ProSoft Engineering Data Backup.
Editor’s Note: Due to a reporting error the eSATA speed of the drive was erroneously reported as 1500 MB/s instead of 150 MB/s. That has been corrected.
