Environmental group Greenpeace responded on Wednesday to Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ open letter on environmental issues facing his company and the industry. Greenpeace seems pleased with the steps Apple has committed to taking, raising the company’s ranking from a 2.7 to a five out of 10.
“Apple’s new commitment to environmental transparency and the phase out of the worst chemicals in its product range are genuine steps forward,” said the group in a written statement.
In addition to eliminating or reducing the use of chemicals including Arsenic, Mercury, PVC, Brominated flame retardants and others, Apple will also release its first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007.
Apple also committed to expanding its existing take back programs this year.
“We look forward to working with the new, greener Apple in future,” said Greenpeace.
