Nova media on Friday introduced its Globesurfer Icon 7.2 Ready, a USB modem that enables Macs and PCs to communicate wirelessly on HSDPA, 3G UMTS, EDGE and GPRS cell networks worldwide. It’s expected to ship soon and will cost €299 ($406.42).
Similar to nova’s recently announced Globetrotter Express 7.2 Ready, the Globesurfer can download data at up to 7.2 megabits per second over High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) networks, and up to 384 kilobits per second upstream. But the Globetrotter is an ExpressCard/34 device, which limits it to MacBook Pro systems. The Globesurfer Icon 7.2 Ready will work with any Mac running Mac OS X v10.4.3 or later.
For areas where HSDPA or 3G UMTS are not available, the Globesurfer Icon 7.2 Ready will automatically fall back to download speeds up to 220 kilobits per second and upload speeds up to 80 kilobits per second.
Nova media includes launch2net, a software utility that helps configure the Globesurfer for operation on mobile networks worldwide, saving you from having to enter connection details manually or define any modem scripts. More than 300 connection settings are included.
