Spiderweb Software has released the source code to Blades of Exile, one of its stable of role-playing adventure games for Mac and Windows.
Blades of Exile started out as an “adventure construction kit.” It included three large adventures and offered an extensible architecture that enabled enterprising modders to build their own scenarios. Spiderweb founder Jeff Vogel hopes that the game’s source code release will inspire developers to keep it working into the future.
The code is being released under the Common Public License, so game developers can use it to create their own games. Blades of Exile is a ten-year-old game, noted Spiderweb, and the code is no longer functioning. Vogel said that when people create improved versions of the code, he’ll post it to the Spiderweb Software Web site.
