CodeWeavers on Tuesday announced the release of CrossOver Mac 6.1, a new version of its Windows compatibility software for Intel-based Macs. The software costs $59.95.
CrossOver is one of several Windows compatibility products that’s emerged since the introduction of Intel-based Macs more than a year ago. It differs from other products like Parallels Desktop or Boot Camp because it does not require a discrete version of Windows in order to operate. Instead, CrossOver — which has its roots in the open-source WINE project for Linux — provides a compatibility layer, enabling users to run Windows software from Mac OS X directly.
CrossOver Mac 6.1 sports new enhancements and capabilities, according to CodeWeavers, such as the ability for users of Microsoft Outlook to work remotely using RPC over HTTP. The new release also improves game support and performance, according to CodeWeavers CEO Jeremy White.
“We already ran World of Warcraft and HalfLife 2, but we’ve now improved our speed and frame rates, as well as adding support for other important titles like Call of Duty 2,” said White.
Windows applications supported by CrossOver Mac 6.1 include the Windows release of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project, Intuit Quicken and QuickBooks, and Half-Life 2.
System requirements call for an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X v10.4 and 120MB of free disk space. CodeWeavers notes that CrossOver Mac should run on “Leopard seed 9A377a and later,” but withholds support for Mac OS X v10.5 until it is formally released.
