DivX has released DivX for Mac 6.7, an updated version of the bundle software that combines all of their tools for encoding and viewing DivX movies on the Mac. The new bundle is available for immediate download and can be purchased for $19.99.
DivX is a popular encoding system for digital video, especially for video distributed on the Internet. Based on MPEG-4, the DivX codec enables users to encode high-quality video at comparatively low bit-rates, without sacrificing lots of quality in the process. DivX is not related to the now-defunct DIVX limited-access DVD format once sold at some electronics retailers.
DivX for Mac 6.7 comprises DivX Player 2.0, DivX Codec 6.6, DivX Converter 1.2, DivX Web Player 1.3.1 and DivX Content Updater 1.2.1. All of the new application versions sport enhancements — DivX Player, for example, is a Universal binary, supports playback of DivX VOD movies, and features full-screen playback of DivX Video. The codec is up to 12 percent faster for decoding; the converter has been updated for the new version of the codec; the Web player sports a “Desktop Dimmer” feature and the content uploader has bug fixes.
A free version is also available that includes a 15-day trial version of the DivX Converter and a 6-month trial version of the DivX Codec for Mac with Pro features. The ability to actually play back DivX-encoded files does not expire.
