The Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) has been part of Mac OS X since Jaguar (Mac OS X v10.2) was released. Now CUPS is officially part of Apple, according to CUPS creator Michael R. Sweet.
“In February of 2007, Apple Inc. acquired ownership the CUPS source code and hired me (Michael R Sweet), the creator of CUPS,” said Sweet in a blog post.
Although Apple now owns the source code, CUPS will remain an open-source project available for UNIX and other operating systems under a GPL2/LGPL2 license, according to Sweet. Sweet revealed the news on the CUPS Web site this week.
Sweet said that he is primarily working on non-CUPS work, but will continue to develop and support the software.
