Western Digital announced Tuesday that it will release is WD RE2 (RAID Edition) 750GB hard disk drive in July. It will cost $265.
The WD RE2 (RAID Edition) is especially made for enterprise data storage needs. It features 3.0 Gb/s data transfer rate, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and 16MB cache, and has a Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) rating of 1.2 million hours in high duty cycle environments.
The drive is aimed at file servers, e-mail servers and mail servers where uptime and fast access are crucial. It also features improved vibration performance, better shock characteristics and enhancements to reduce power consumption, noise and vibration.
It uses Western Digital’s “SecurePark” technology to par the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is idle. “IntelliSeek” reduces the actuator’s movement rather than rapidly accelerating the actuator and waiting for the rotation to catch up; this reduces power usage by more than 60 percent.
