Blizzard Entertainment held its second BlizzCon event this past weekend and introduced a new expansion pack for World of Warcraft entitled Wrath of the Lich King. It also offered details of another upcoming game headed to Mac and PC, StarCraft II, by providing further detail about how Terrans will be portrayed.
StarCraft II is the long-awaited sequel to Blizzard’s epic real-time strategy game set in outer space, that pits Terran forces against aliens called the Protoss and Zerg. StarCraft II picks up the story where the first game’s expansion pack, “Brood War,” left off, presenting a new cast of characters to players and lots of enhancements to multiplayer gaming through Blizzard’s Battle.net online service.
The company has already unveiled some of the features that the Protoss race will receive in the new game, and this time it’s the Terrans’ turn. Blizzard has posted detailed profiles on the Marine, Reaper, Ghost, Viking and Command Center units that will be used in the game. The StarCraft II site has been updated with screenshots, video and concept art, as well.
StarCraft trivia buffs will surely appreciate more details on the Ghost unit; at one time, Blizzard had planned a spinoff game for consoles entitled StarCraft: Ghost, which was ultimately cancelled. The Ghost is a stealth-focused unit with advanced psionic abilities and invisibility.
Blizzard isn’t yet saying when StarCraft II will hit store shelves, but it’s planned for a simultaneous release on both Mac OS X and Windows.
