Epson America on Wednesday unveiled the Perfection V500 Photo a scanner with 6400 dot per inch (DPI) optical resolution. It costs $249.
The V500 also uses “ReadyScan LED” technology to scan images — the tech eliminates warm-up time, automatically turns off in standby mode, and is more efficient than cold cathode fluorescent lamps, according to Epson. It also adjusts color of the light source based on the type of original being scanned — whilte light is used for positive film, blue light for negative. The LEDs used are mercury-free.
The V500 can scan images up to 17 x 22 inches. It features 48-bit color depth and 3.4 dynamic range. It comes with a built-in Transparency Unit with moving carriage that lets you mount up to four slides or two film strips up to 12 frames, or medium format film of 2.25 inches, 120/220 and 6 x12 centimeters. An optional $199 Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) lets you scan multiple documents.
The scanner includes technology that removes dust and scratches from images and can help restore the color of faded photos, slides and negatives. It also comes with the “Creativity Suite,” a package of software that includes scanning, optical character recognition (OCR), including Adobe Photoshop Elements and other software. It’s Mac and Windows-compatible, and the scanner is also TWAIN-compliant.
Epson’s Web site had not been updated with information about the V500 as Macworld posted this article.
