Mosquito Ops is a new free 3D action game for the Mac and PC. You can download it now.
Created for a university lecture in about 12 weeks, the game is the creation of Oliver Hörbinger and Clemens Mautner Markhof. In Mosquito Ops, you live the daily life of a mosquito — you’ve got to suck enough blood, find lost eggs and sneak into anti-mosquito protected key locations.
Based on OpenGL and C++, Mosquito Ops uses a few external open source libraries, such as GLUT, FreeImage, OpenAL, ColDet and GLEW. It was programmed for the Mac using Apple’s Xcode environment, and models were created in Photoshop CS2, MisfitModel 3D and SketchUp.
It’s also a good example of how some careful planning can let programmers develop multi-platform games and software without going through too much trouble. “In the end it required only additionally 15 – 20 hours of programming and figuring the differences out,” said the programmers in a posting to the game’s Web page.
The game consists of a four mission campaign, one demo level and a built-in game editor.
