G-Technology on Monday introduced its G-Speed eS, an external Serial ATA (eSATA) RAID system that supports up to four hard disk drives. The device is priced starting at $999.
The G-Speed eS has a 3 gigabit per second eSATA interface and is configurable as a RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 system — it can also be used as a JBOD (just a bunch of disks). The device requires an optional eSATA interface card to work with Apple’s Mac Pro, which G-Technology sells — Macs do not yet have eSATA interfaces built in. G-Technology’s car is a four-port model that can connect up to four G-Speed eS units simultaneously.
The system is made from an aluminum enclosure, and features lockable, removable disk drive enclosures and a fan, so you can hot-swap components if they fail.
The system is aimed primarily at digital content creators and video editors. G-Technology says that the unit can support multi-stream DV, HD, DVCPRO HD, REDCODE, ProRes 422 and uncompressed SD playback in either RAID 0 or RAID 5 modes.
The 1 terabyte (TB) unit is priced at $999. G-Technology also sells 2TB, 3TB and 4TB units for $1299, $1999 and $3199 respectively. The PCIe RAID Host Adapter is available for an additional $300.
