Somehow I missed it last week, but our friend Derrick Story, who publishes the excellent Digital Story blog, posted a quick review of Canon’s new PowerShot G9 point-and-shoot digital camera.
The G9 is a 12.1-megapixel camera with a 6x optical zoom and a large 3-inch LCD on the back, and is priced at $499 . The G9 the first Canon compact to be released in quite a while to support RAW images, which is of interest to many D-SLR owners looking for a small camera to carry around. (I’ve been waiting to play with one, but haven’t yet had a chance.)
Derrick had some issues with the G9’s noise levels, and its RAW format is not yet compatible with Apple’s Aperture, but otherwise he finds it a good “pack” camera for those times when lugging a D-SLR is more than you want.
