Olive Media Products and MusicGiants on Thursday announced that users of Olive’s Opus media player will be able to purchase and download digital music that’s unencumbered with Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions, and that uses lossless compression techniques.
Olive sells a line of audiophile-quality digital music components designed to be integrated into a home entertainment system. The Opus features a built-in optical drive and hard disk drive (up to 750GB). It also features a built-in database identifying music tracks, and technology designed to bring out the most in your digital audio (which Olive calls “Pure Audio System”). The peripheral also connects to Macs and PCs, and can interface with iPods and other digital music players.
Initially, Olive plans to offer the Opus system preloaded with music from MusicGiants. The companies are offering playlists and collections priced at $1.29 per track. In the first calendar quarter of 2008, Olive and MusicGiants plans to offer Opus users the ability to buy individual tracks or albums “through the stereo” itself.
MusicGiant’s DRM-free catalog includes content from Miles Davis, Paul McCartney, classical composers like Mozart, Bach and Mahler, and more.
